Game On: Why We Play and Why It Matters

Bonus Round: Level 4

You’re doing great! You’ve made it to level 4 of the bonus round game. That means there’s only one level after this one. Here’s how you can get to the last level…

(The rules here are a little complicated. Talk to me in private if you have any questions.)

Task

Like levels 1 and 3, this task is connected with the gameplay log. But unlike those two tasks, this one requires collaboration with other students.

Here’s how it will work. You have to be a part of a chain of responses to a gameplay log post where the first letter of each post spells out the last name of the author of one of the texts on our syllabus (either required reading of suggested reading).

For example, to get a bonus point from the name of Csikszentmihaly (I really don’t recommend this one—it’s really long and it would be nearly impossible to succeed), the first person would have to start a thread in the gameplay log that begins with the letter C, for example, “Cheating is a real puzzle in thinking about games…” Then someone else would have to reply to that post with a response that begins with the letter S, for example, “Something you wrote there really interested me…” Then a third person would have to write a response that begins with the letter I, for example, “I think you made an excellent point…” And so on.

Here are a few extra rules:

  • Someone at some point on this thread has to mention the author by name. You don’t necessarily have to quote the author but you do have to use one of their ideas.
  • Each person can only contribute to the thread once! You have to hope that other people also contribute to the thread in order for you to get the bonus points.
  • What if someone accidentally ruins the thread? Maybe someone who doesn’t realize the game is happening will try to contribute and mess up the spelling of the name. That’s too bad. I guess you’ll have to start a new thread.
  • Can more than one thread earn bonus points? Yes! Suppose five people spell out “SUITS” and you didn’t get to contribute. That’s okay: you can contribute to a different thread. And while you can only contribute to any given thread once, you can contribute to more than one thread. For instance, if you were one of the five people who spelled out “SUITS,” you can help your fellow students by contributing to a different thread.

Clue

The URL for the next level will be the first name of the first author whose last name gets spelled out in a thread. (There might be more than one successful thread. I’ll choose the first one that’s completed.)

For example, if you did somehow manage to spell out “Csikszentmihaly” in a thread (again, I really don’t recommend this one!), the URL you should go to will be eganphilosophy.com/mihaly

I probably won’t have the URL set up right away. You might have to wait 24 hours before I notice it and set things up. But I’ll try not to delay it for too long.
